Chris Davis Goes Deep Three Times. What's Next?
May 21, 2014
Chris Davis homered three times on Tuesday, the first Orioles player to do so since, well, Chris Davis. Davis previously accomplished the feat on Aug. 24, 2012 versus the Blue Jays. Prior to that, Nick Markakis homered three times on Aug. 22, 2006.
Dan Connolly provides a rundown of O's three-homer games and notes that Eddie Murray and Boog Powell are the only other Baltimore players to have multiple three-homer games, with both sluggers doing it three times. Murray did it on Aug. 19, 1979, Sept. 14, 1980, and Aug. 26, 1985. Powell did it on Aug. 10, 1963, June 27, 1964, and Aug. 15, 1966. No Orioles player has hit four home runs in a game.
Who is the least recognizable O's player on the list? For me, that award goes to Juan Beniquez, who homered three times on June 12, 1986, versus the Yankees. Beniquez played 17 seasons in the bigs, but only one of them was in Baltimore. His three home runs on June 12 accounted for half of his homers during the 1986 season.
Here are some additional thoughts related to Davis, the Orioles, and multi-homer games:
-Davis doesn't have a long home run track record with the Orioles, but he does have a memorable one. In addition to being one of three O's players with multiple three-homer games, Davis holds the single-season home run record (53) and his next Eutaw Street home run will push him past Luke Scott as the sole leader for those. What's next, Crush?
-It's fitting that the Orioles' all-time home run leader, Cal Ripken Jr., has at least one game with three home runs. Ripken hit three of his 431 home runs on May 28, 1996 versus the Mariners. Murray (343) and Powell (303) follow him on the O's career leaderboard for long balls.
-I was surprised to not see Jim Gentile's name on the three-homer list. After all, Gentile is the guy who hit two grand slams in the first two innings of a game on May 9, 1961. Gentile finished that day 2-for-3, with a walk, a strikeout, and a sac fly to complement his grand slams. Gentile had 21 multi-homer games in his career but never went deep more than twice in a game.
-A few other notable names not on the list of O's three home-run games: Rafael Palmeiro (34 two-homer games), Brady Anderson (17 two-homer games), and Frank Robinson. Robinson, however, did have a three-homer game for the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 22, 1959.
-Sixteen players have had four home runs in a game. You may remember the most recent from May 8, 2012.
