Orioles manager Buck Showalter raised some eyebrows in Birdland and beyond on Wednesday by suggesting that Dylan Bundy could be stretched out and used as a starter this season. While the news itself generated plenty of headlines, not nearly as much has been said about Showalter’s fantastic “Rocco Johnson” quote.
Showalter told him: “You need to change your name to Rocco Johnson and grow a Fu Manchu and you can ambush people for about a month before they figure out that’s him, that’s Dylan Bundy.”
Meoli’s story is one of the only ones I could find that offered that tidbit. For example, the MLB.com story included the context for the quote, but not the best part of it.
“It’s one of those things that if you told me we’d be where we are with him right now, not that I’d be surprised, I’d be real happy with it,” Showalter said. “You can tell everything with him. I was kidding with him today down in the bullpen. I said: ‘You’re in a perfect ambush situation now.’ He said: ‘What do you mean?’ I said: ‘An umpire came up to me yesterday, to [pitching coach Dave Wallace], and said, ‘This guy is really good. Who’s this guy?’ [I told him], ‘You’re back in the they don’t know who you are [mode].'”
Can we have a Rocco Johnson Bobblehead Night at Camden Yards? Don’t leave out the Fu Manchu.
