Would you believe that Nolan Ryan once struggled to beat the Baltimore Orioles?
Today in Orioles History – April 14, 1991 – the Ryan Express won his first game against the O’s in nearly 15 years. Ryan allowed three first-innings runs, but Texas gave him the lead by the end of the first inning as the Rangers cruised to a 15-3 victory at home.
Ryan dropped two decisions to the O’s the season prior, making it through a combined seven innings while allowing 10 runs, seven of which were earned. Overall, he had lost nine straight versus the Orioles prior to this game dating back to 1976.
Ryan finished his career with a 10-17 record against the Orioles. The 17 losses were the third-most he had against opponents after the Los Angeles Dodgers (19) and Oakland Athletics (18). His 4.21 ERA versus Baltimore in 33 career games is second only to the 5.62 ERA he had versus the Houston Astros in 12 games.
